Swiss government opposes responsible business initiative campaign

ZURICH, Oct 6 (Reuters) – Switzerland’s government urged voters on Tuesday to reject a plan to hold Swiss-based companies responsible by law for human rights and environmental abuses abroad, saying the campaign by activists went too far.

Proponents of the “responsible business initiative” want Swiss companies to apply mandatory due diligence to identify risks to people and the environment in all their business, even involving suppliers abroad, and let victims seek redress in Switzerland.

The public will vote on the initiative in a referendum on Nov. 29 under the country’s system of direct democracy.

Switzerland is home to a number of multinationals, from Nestle to commodities trading house Glencore. Many businesses reject the proposed changes saying they would lead to a flood of legal cases.

The political committee backing an initiative for commercial production of marijuana in Ventura County has spent nearly $1.5 million and raised nearly all its campaign funding from a business that stands to benefit.

The world’s biggest private messaging service has created the UK’s first ‘WhatsApp High Street’ – allowing small and medium-sized companies to connect easily with their customers. Businesses taking part can now communicate on issues like social distancing in small premises, new opening hours, stock issues, table reservations or reduced menus. Twelve firms on Market Street, in Watford, Herts., have joined the pilot programme, with experts from WhatsApp training them to use its free-to-download Business app as a shopfront for their products and services.

Among those taking part is Underground Tattoo, a local tattoo parlour which also offers piercings.

The United States Air Force (USAF) Awards $62M Contract to One Network Enterprises for Its Item Master Logistics Capability Initiative (IMLCI)

DALLAS, Oct. 1, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — One Network Enterprises, a global provider of multi-party business networks for autonomous supply chain management, today announced that it has been awarded a $61.9 million contract from the USAF for its Item Master Logistics Capability Initiative (IMLCI). The Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract enables One Network and its partner, Alion Science and Technology Corporation, to support the Air Force Material Command’s logistics initiatives. The award is the result of a competitive acquisition process by the USAF.  

The contract provides for commercial off-the-shelf software licenses and related technical support services. Work will be performed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and is expected to be completed September 2025. The first objective for the new project will establish a full Item Master Catalog and Parts Provisioning capability across the USAF, and enable Item of Supply access (such as a National Stock Number (NSN))

What started as hobby ended up being a huge career move for a Queens-based beekeeper.

Nick Hoefly started beekeeping in 2015 after he and a friend decided to each get a hive of their own.

“My wife and I had just bought a house and we were lucky enough to have an outside space,” said Hoefly. “I had been talking with a friend of mine and we were kicking ideas back and forth on what we should do. Considering that I had a nice flat rooftop. we got talking about using that space and I started coming across rooftop hives and that peaked both of our interests.
