Coronavirus YouTube workout Active Kids 2.0 explodes in school year


Business is booming for Father Lopez volleyball coach Larissa Maloney

In April, when high school teacher and coach Larissa Maloney started her own workout YouTube channel dedicated to keeping kids active through the spring quarantine, she expected it to fizzle out during the summer. 

But when the school year ended in May, the clicks didn’t stop. Maloney’s daily videos, called Active Kids 2.0, were more popular than ever, and being watched all around the world, from California to Ireland. 

So instead of closing up shop like she thought, the Father Lopez volleyball and PE coach jumped in head first. 

“I was doing Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. every day for three months,” Maloney said of her daily workout videos, which usually last about 30 minutes and were originally intended just for her PE students at Father Lopez.

Scotlynn USA owner Ryan Carter is Florida’s Small Business Person of the Year

A local business owner has been named Florida’s Small Business Person of the Year.

Ryan Carter, a vice president and co-owner of Scotlynn USA Division — a transportation and logistics company based in Fort Myers — clinched the title this year.

The statewide honor came as a bit of surprise to Carter, a native of Evansville, Indiana.

“It was a surprise because I felt like this is a massive state with a lot of very successful entrepreneurs — everywhere,” he said.

The Day – Mystic Knotwork owner named Small Business Person of the Year


Mystic — The U.S. Small Business Administration has recognized Matt Beaudoin, owner of Mystic Knotwork, as Connecticut’s Small Business Person of the Year.

Mark Hayward, interim director of SBA’s Connecticut District Office, presented a plaque to Beaudoin on Tuesday morning at the Cottrell Street location of Mystic Knotwork. The location is primarily a workshop, and Mystic Knotwork also has a retail storefront at the corner of East Main and Holmes streets, which opened in 2017.

Connecticut Small Business Development Center adviser Matt Nemeth nominated Beaudoin last fall, after working with him to secure capital funding.

Beaudoin said he learned of the award in March and was originally supposed to be honored this week in Washington, D.C., where he was looking forward to networking. It’s currently National Small Business Week, and because of the coronavirus pandemic, the SBA conference is instead being held virtually.

Small Business Week ‘more important than ever’ this year | Community Alert

The New Braunfels business spirit still thrives despite COVID-19, and this year’s Small Business Week observance will promote the way forward.
