San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg leads the daily Covid-19 update on Aug. 24, 2020.

Throughout his administration, business leaders have vehemently opposed Nirenberg on matters they say would wreak havoc on local businesses such as a mandatory paid sick leave ordinance and a plan to reduce carbon emissions.

For now, it seems many of those misgivings have been set aside — although not forgotten.

Nirenberg and his allies have assembled a cadre of business leaders to back his plan to use a 1/8-cent sales tax for a workforce development program aimed at helping

Building A Strong Enterprise Through A Diverse, Skilled Workforce

“What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say,” wrote 19th-century essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. At the office, managers and employees should be assessed purely on talent and performance. One company, Joonko, reduces bias in the hiring process by finding and curating diverse and highly-skilled job candidates for employers.

I sat down with Ilit Raz, cofounder and CEO of Joonko, to get her thoughts on diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the workplace. Joonko, which has offices in Tel Aviv and Birmingham, Alabama, uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help employers hire qualified and underrepresented job seekers for remote positions.

“There’s strong evidence that the companies which intentionally invest diversity are more innovative, yielding elevated business performance. Having a more diverse team makes for more diverse viewpoints in product development, sales and marketing processes,

“We’re also evaluating our business to make sure we have the right number of team members in the right roles and in areas where customers need us most,” a Dell spokesman said Monday in a statement.

Round Rock, Texas-based Dell has faced uneven demand during the coronavirus pandemic. While businesses and consumers have snapped up personal computers to enable working from home, some businesses have become more cautious in major data-center purchases. Dell had already suspended 401(k) matching
