Colorado Springs cooking school owners sell a line of spices and has classes about using them | Lifestyle

What started out as a cooking school has grown to include a successful spice business with a Spice of the Month Club, of which I’m a proud member.

Co-owners Cortney Smith and David Cook’s line of spice mixes and condiments is marketed as Gather Ingredients. They’ve used the spices in their various cooking classes, but they realized that students might end up knowing only one way to use a particular spice — in the class recipes.

So, a new series of classes was born. A single spice is the star of an hourlong presentation. Smith or Cook discusses its use in different styles of cuisines and demonstrates a recipe for tasting. Students get a package of the featured spice to take home.

Masala Spatula a Colorado Springs cottage business of Indian spices and cooking classes | Cheyenne Edition

Payal Sathe has proven herself to be adept at not only starting a small business, but keeping it afloat and successful during the trials of the current pandemic.

Her business, Masala Spatula, focuses on showcasing Indian cuisine through the sale of Indian spice blends that each come complete with tasty yet simple recipes. Gradually she has expanded by offering in-home cooking classes and custom-made gift baskets.

Sathe arrived in Boulder from India as a newlywed in 2008. She had already received a law degree in India, and went on to earn a master’s in law from the University of Denver in 2010. Along came three children, and Sathe enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom. In 2017, her family moved to the Briargate area in Colorado Springs due to her husband’s employment. Eventually Sathey ealized: “I need to do something!” to complement her role as wife and mother.
