Sourdough baking during coronavirus lockdown sparks bakery business in Jackson

JACKSON, MI — When much of the U.S. started staying at home because of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, and baking sourdough bread became the hobby of the hour, Aaron Cole was ahead of the curve — his culture was already going strong.

In fact, he’d baked enough for he and his wife to wonder if they should slow their carb intake. Not wanting his sourdough to go to waste, Cole asked on Facebook if anyone wanted the bread. Interest was garnered in minutes. People soon asked how he got his sourdough to be that good — they couldn’t even get their starting cultures right.

So DoughNation Bakery was born.
