Pakistan denies visa to Indian diplomat

Pakistan has denied visa to senior diplomat Jayant Khobragade who was set to be appointed as acting head of Indian high commission in Islamabad, people familiar with the development said on Sunday.

It is learnt that Pakistan did not approve his visa on the grounds that he is too senior for the post.

The people said Pakistan was conveyed by India in June about its move to send Khobragade as India’s deputy high commissioner to that country.

 

There was no official comment on the issue either by Pakistan or India.

Following India’s decision to withdraw special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August last year, Pakistan had downgraded diplomatic ties by expelling the Indian high commissioner in Islamabad.

Pakistan also decided not to send the new envoy it had named to head its mission in New Delhi following India’s decision on Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan rejects visa to Indian diplomat, cites seniority

The Pakistan Foreign Office on Sunday rejected the appointment of Indian diplomat Jayant Khobragade as charge d’affaires in Islamabad by denying him visa.

He was to replace the current Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires Gaurav Ahluwalia.

Pakistan contended that if the mission has been downsized to half the strength then why is India trying to send such a senior official.

Jayant Khobragade, who served as a counsellor in the Indian High Commission in Islamabad some years ago, has also held assignments in Russia, Kazakhstan and Spain, and was ambassador to the Kyrgyz Republic between 2013 and 2017.

India has said it can send whoever it wishes to in any Indian mission.

Khobragade was proposed for the position in June when India had scaled down diplomatic ties with Pakistan, seeking to reduce mission strength by 50 per cent.
