New stab at statewide public health insurance could be do-able, consultant says

Writing about healthcare coverage is always a dizzying experience, I find, but lately there’s some encouraging news. Recently a legislative committee heard an update on the proposed Health Security Act. Proponents say it would save billions and control rising costs while providing access and almost universal coverage.

Introduced in the 2019 legislative session, the Health Security Act offered a detailed, public healthcare plan, run by cooperatives, that would cover all New Mexicans. Plan members could choose their providers, even across state lines. Private, for-profit insurance would take a supplementary role. The ambitious bill, introduced by some Dem heavy hitters, called for fiscal analysis to determine potential costs, savings and coverage. If lawmakers and the administration found it feasible, it would be implemented.

The bills ran into resistance. Although it was presented as a study, it would “lay the

Tokyo Olympics consultant paid $370,000 to IOC member’s son

TOKYO (Kyodo) — A consulting firm for the Tokyo Olympic bid committee transferred some $370,000 to the son of one-time influential IOC member Lamine Diack and his company before and after the Japanese capital was picked in September 2013 as the host city, documents showed Sunday.

The findings, based on a review of financial documents and further reporting, may help resolve the question of what happened to the money from the consulting firm and shed further light on the allegation that the Tokyo bid committee engaged in vote-buying.

Black Tidings Co., the now-defunct consulting firm based in Singapore, received a total of 230 million yen ($2 million) from the bid committee paid into a bank account in the city-state in July and October 2013. The then chief of the Japanese committee confirmed the payment but denied any wrongdoing.

According to the documents, by January 2014 the Singapore firm had wired

FINCEN FILES: Money trail ties Tokyo Olympic bid consultant to kin of IOC member : The Asahi Shimbun

Documents reviewed by an international media consortium have pieced together the flow of money from a consultant of the Tokyo Olympic bid committee to the son of an influential member of the International Olympic Committee.

U.S. bank and French criminal investigation records show that about $370,000 (about 37 million yen) was transferred from the bank account of a Singapore consulting firm hired by the bid committee to help its efforts to bring the Summer Olympics to the Japanese capital in 2020.

The money was sent by Black Tidings Co. around the time of the September 2013 IOC meeting that decided on Tokyo as the 2020 host city and went to the bank accounts of Papa Massata Diack, 55, and his company. He is the son of Lamine Diack, who was then a voting member of the IOC as well as president of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

What Makes an Effective Consultant?

Due to the economic downturns the United States experienced over the last 50 years—and the current impact of COVID–19—it should be pretty clear that there will always be events that negatively impact our country’s economy.

Many of them are man-made. For instance, in 1972 to ’73, OPEC—due to its dominance as a producer—was able to quadruple the worldwide price of oil. This dramatic step-function increase caused the 1974-74 NYSE stock market collapse—the third worse in the history of our country, out-shadowed only by the 1929 Great Depression and the 2007 Great Recession. There wasn’t a lot our federal government was able to do other than to encourage conservation through actions such as reducing the speed limit on interstate highways to 55 mph. Thankfully, since that time, our country has become energy self-sufficient.

Similar stories to the one above can be told about the later recessions, including the ones related to
