Clayton Kershaw tosses a postseason gem as Dodgers sweep Brewers

During MLB’s busy wild-card series, we’ll keep you updated right here on results, must-see moments and what’s next in each matchup.

What happened? You know the narrative by now. In October, Clayton Kershaw just isn’t himself. He doesn’t perform like a future Hall of Famer or the best pitcher on the planet. While that oversimplifies things a bit, the fact is there is a Good Clayton Kershaw and Bad Clayton Kershaw in the postseason.

No doubt which one we saw Thursday. It was Best Clayton Kershaw.

It was only the first round, so this isn’t the grand Kershaw redemption story, but it was Kershaw and the Dodgers taking care of business. Kershaw threw eight shutout innings, striking out 13 as the Dodgers beat the Brewers 3-0 to sweep the NL wild-card series and move on to the next round.

A Kris Bryant grand slam in the top of the third Saturday night put the Cubs up, 5-2, and it looked like they might be able to take care of business on their own. Instead, the White Sox stormed back with a funky bottom of the fourth — highlighted by Jose Abreu’s clutch, bases-clearing double — and went on to victory over their cross-town rivals.

Cubs clinch NL Central Division as Cardinals lose to Brewers

While the Cubs were engaged in a back-and forth battle against the White Sox on Saturday, the Brewers did them a favor.

The Cubs clinched the NL Central title when Milwaukee beat St. Louis 3-0 on Saturday. The Cubs will head into the playoffs with the No. 3 seed in the National League and home field advantage through the best-of-three Wild Card Series.

“When you start reaching some of your goals,” Cubs manager David Ross said before the game, “it’s a little badge of honor that you get when you put in the work and are able to reap the rewards on the back end of the season. But the way I feel about this group would not change whether we win the division or not. I’m really proud of these guys.”

When the Cubs clinched a playoff berth earlier this week, they ensured that for the fifth time in
