China eases visa restrictions for foreigners

China will ease entry restrictions for foreigners from Monday, with the spread of the coronavirus through imported cases largely under control.

As of Wednesday, China had 10 new imported cases and no new local cases or deaths, with a total of 168 confirmed cases still being treated, and 6,864 close contacts of previous cases still being monitored.

Foreign nationals holding valid Chinese residence permits for work, personal matters or family reunion are allowed to enter China without applying for new visas, according to a Chinese foreign ministry statement released late on Wednesday.

Get the latest insights and analysis from our Global Impact newsletter on the big stories originating in China.

If these permits expired after March 28, the holders can apply for new visas through Chinese embassies or consulates if the purpose of the visit to China remains unchanged.

But other restrictions introduced in March would continue, the statement said.

On Thursday Mr McLaren said he agreed to participate in the immigration scheme on the urging of Mr Maguire in 2014.

“I thought we lacked the capacity in our business to service Chinese people. When I was talking to Daryl about that he said you need to talk to Maggie, she might be able to help,” Mr McLaren said.

DC Judge Says Gov’t May Not Be Obeying Diversity Visa Order

Law360 (September 23, 2020, 10:49 PM EDT) — A D.C. federal judge said the Trump administration may have violated the court’s previous orders if it told certain Diversity Visa lottery winners that they couldn’t start the visa process because they weren’t involved in a separate lawsuit where relief was issued for the visa seekers.

Counsel for 1,000 diversity visa selectees and their families told U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta in a hearing on Wednesday that the government was telling certain visa seekers they could not sit down for a visa interview because they were not named plaintiffs in Gomez v. Visa’s Crypto Strategy Is Driving Its Next Stage Of Growth

Bitcoin was invented to disrupt existing monetary systems that many felt were too expensive and exclusionary. With this in mind, it was given a much broader value proposition than a deflationary issuance policy and hard cap of 21 million units. Through the novel use of blockchain technology, it also allows anyone to send money to a counterpart around the world in a few minutes for fractions of a dollar.

This functionality placed incumbent payment platforms such as card networks and interbank messaging systems directly in bitcoin’s crosshairs. While some firms dismissed these concerns, others saw the potential and looked for ways to derive value for their partners and shareholders.
