A week after Murphy’s new MVC laws, drivers still waiting in long, winding lines

Victory was measured by Stephanie Montanez of Hoboken by a set of shiny new license plates she possessed after leaving the state Motor Vehicle Commission agency on Summit Avenue in Jersey City.

That transaction cost her more than four hours in time.

“I was expecting much worse,” Montanez said, who said she arrived at 5:30 a.m., Friday. The line extended down the block and around the corner when she joined it.

“I’m just so excited it went so well,” Montanez said, leaving the agency before 10 a.m. She gave the employees good grades for their work, once she was inside.

Friday marked a week since Governor Phil Murphy signed two laws designed to get people out of agency lines and allow them to do business on the MVC website instead.

Those new laws moved more driver’s license renewals online by allowing drivers to reuse their photos for two online renewals.

Gruthan Bioscience to develop new class of cholesterol-lowering drugs

Gruthan Bioscience, LLC, a Medical University of South Carolina startup based in Charleston, South Carolina, received a Small Business technology Transfer (STTR) award from the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute in August to take the next step in developing a novel class of cholesterol-lowering drugs to treat familial hypercholesterolemia.

The startup was founded by liver researcher Stephen Duncan, Ph.D., SmartState Chair in Regenerative Medicine and chairman of the Department of Regenerative Medicine and Cell Biology at MUSC.

Patients with familial hypercholesterolemia have very high levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), colloquially known as “bad cholesterol.” The receptor that should bind to the cholesterol and remove it from the blood is mutated and no longer functions.

A subset of these patients inherit mutations in the LDL receptor from both parents and are at high risk of developing severe and deadly cardiovascular disease

How Data Can Help Your Business Better Prepare for Its Next Key Pivot

If there’s one thing business owners have learned during the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s that the ability to adapt and pivot is key for surviving a crisis.

Unfortunately, there’s a distinct difference between pivoting and pivoting successfully. While some brands are able to pivot in a way that helps them stand out and disrupt their industry, others attempt radical changes that cause them to fall flat on their face.

So how can you determine if your key pivot — whether part of a proactive planning process, or a response to an unforeseen crisis — will be the right move for your brand?

It comes down to your ability to use your data.

Better understanding current and past trends.

As I’ve noted previously, data analytics is going to have the biggest impact when it is focused on your key performance indicators. Data points like retention rates and cost per customer acquisition

Towards the end of March 2020, we got a wake-up call on what real discomfort is.

Six-month visa extensions for many workers were announced in July, and a month later their partners’ and children’s visas were added.

But an immigration adviser, Toni Alexander, said the visas have not all been issued and, as many were previously extended to 25 September under the Epidemic Management Notice, they expire tomorrow.

Immigrants have also approached RNZ with their concerns about the delays in communication and visas being issued.

“The extension is meant to be automatic but they can’t electronically automatically extend them – they have to do it manually,” Alexander said.

“Still a number of them have not been extended. Tomorrow is the date when most of these expire. When we call immigration
